Dehumidifier hire for water damage: hire it, or call a restorer?
Dehumidifiers and carpet dryers are a phone call away from any hire shop, and on published prices cheaper than a restorer’s equipment rate. What the hire shop does not supply is extraction and a reading that says the building is dry.
For a wet room, the equipment is the easy part. Dehumidifiers and carpet dryers are a phone call away from any hire shop, and on published prices hiring them yourself is cheaper than a restorer’s daily equipment rate. What the hire shop does not supply is the part that decides whether the floor survives: extraction, and a reading that says the building is actually dry.
Published hire prices, against a restorer’s
| Line item | Published rate | Basis | Published by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dehumidifier hire (64 to 91 L/day units) | from $110 | per day, including GST | Agile Equipment |
| Portable dehumidifier hire (up to 85 L/day) | from $90 | per day, not stated | Heidelberg Hire |
| Dehumidifier hire (up to 2.3 L/hour) | from $121 | per day, including GST | HireDepot |
| Low-profile air mover hire | from $44 | per day, including GST | Agile Equipment |
| Carpet blower hire, delivered and set up | from $49 | per day, not stated | Carpet Water Damage Warehouse |
| Line item | Published rate | Basis | Published by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dehumidifier hire | from $149 | per unit per day, minimum 3 days, excluding GST | QLD Flood Restoration |
| Carpet dryer (air mover) hire | from $69 | per unit per day, minimum 3 days, excluding GST | QLD Flood Restoration |
| Carpet water extraction, first hour | from $250 | first hour, excluding GST | QLD Flood Restoration |
| Emergency call-out | from $149 | per attendance, excluding GST | QLD Flood Restoration |
Two things make those tables hard to compare directly. GST is included in some hire prices, excluded from the restorer’s and not stated in others. And the minimum terms differ: Agile charges 4 days out of every 7 with a 2-day minimum; QLD Flood Restoration publishes a 3-day minimum on its equipment. Read the basis column before comparing a number.
One room, three days: hire it or call someone
| DIY hire | Restorer (published rate card) | |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | 1 dehumidifier + 2 air movers, 3 days, Agile: about $594 incl GST | 1 dehumidifier + 2 air movers, 3 days, included |
| Extraction | Not included — a wet vacuum at best | First hour of weighted extraction, included |
| Call-out and set-up | You collect and place it | Included |
| Moisture readings | None unless you buy a meter | Taken daily as part of the job |
| Total | about $594 incl GST | $1,260 excl GST |
The restorer figure is QLD Flood Restoration’s published rates added up by the calculator; two rooms over four days is $1,913. The hire figure is Agile’s published day rates multiplied out. Neither includes stripping, disposal or rebuilding.

When hiring it yourself is reasonable
- Clean water, caught fast, small area. A supply-line leak into one room, noticed within hours, on a hard floor or a carpet you have already got most of the water out of. Category 1 water covers why speed matters.
- You can measure. A moisture meter tells you when to stop. Without one, “feels dry” is how carpets end up dry on top and wet in the underlay.
- No claim, or the insurer has agreed. If you are claiming, the drying record is evidence; ask the insurer before relying on your own.
When it is not
- Grey or black water. A washing machine, dishwasher, toilet or sewage overflow, or floodwater. Health departments treat greywater as potentially infectious, and what Category 3 water soaked is removed rather than dried — see grey water and Category 3.
- Water in the structure. Wall cavities, subfloors and ceilings. Dehumidifiers dry air; getting moisture out of a wall cavity takes opening it up or directed drying, and readings to know.
- More than a room or two, or more than a day old. Agile’s own guidance is that a large unit is for open-plan spaces, commercial premises and Class 2 or 3 losses. NSW Health’s point that mould is likely to return unless you fix the cause is the risk of getting it wrong.
If you hire, how to use it
- Extract first. Get standing water out, and as much as you can out of the carpet, before the dehumidifier goes on.
- Close the room. A dehumidifier drying a room with the windows open is drying the street.
- Air movers across the wet surface, dehumidifier in the room. Kennards describes blower dryers as used in conjunction with dehumidifiers to speed drying of carpets, furnishings and flooring; air movers alone move moisture into the air without removing it.
- Empty or drain it. Units collect tens of litres a day at rated capacity; a full tank stops the unit.
- Stop on a reading, not a feeling. Check the underlay and the wall base, not just the carpet surface. Wet carpet covers what to check.

Common questions
How much does it cost to hire a dehumidifier in Australia?
Published prices read for this site: Agile Equipment $110 a day including GST for units from 64 to 91 litres a day; Heidelberg Hire $90 a day or $270 a week; HireDepot $121 a day or $286 a week including GST, as a guide. Kennards, Coates and Bunnings did not publish a readable price.
How much does carpet dryer hire cost?
Agile Equipment publishes a low-profile air mover at $44 a day including GST. Carpet Water Damage Warehouse publishes carpet blowers from $49 a day per blower including set up, delivery and pick up, and advises at least one blower per room.
Is it cheaper to hire a dehumidifier than call a restorer?
For the equipment alone, often. A dehumidifier and two air movers hired for three days at Agile's published prices comes to about $594 including GST; a restorer's published rate card for one room over three days is $1,260 excluding GST, but that includes extraction and the call-out. The difference is what a hire unit leaves out.
What does a hired dehumidifier not do?
It does not extract water from carpet and underlay, and it does not tell you when the structure is dry. Moisture readings are what show that, and they are also the record an insurer or landlord will ask for.
Will insurance pay for dehumidifier hire?
Where the water came from a listed event, the cost of drying is part of the damage you claim, subject to the policy. Keep the hire invoice and photographs, and ask the insurer before relying on DIY drying for a large area.
How long should I run a dehumidifier after water damage?
Until the materials read dry on a moisture meter, not until the room feels dry. The published restorer rate cards carry a three-day minimum hire, and Kennards' page data shows an average hire duration of 8 days for its dehumidifiers.
