A leaking shower can be a $200 job or a $25,000 one, and the published prices cover that whole range. The difference is not the company. It is what has failed: the grout and silicone you can see, or the waterproofing membrane underneath that you cannot. This page puts the prices Australian businesses publish side by side, then sets out how to tell which job you are pricing.

For the bigger end, hipages publishes waterproofing an average bathroom at $500–$750 and a bathroom renovation at $8,000–$35,000. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission reports that bathroom claims under the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme in 2024–25 averaged almost $25,000 in rectification costs (Queensland Building and Construction Commission, Industry Snapshot Top 10 defects: Waterproofing).

Three different jobs behind one word

What “fixing a leaking shower” can mean, and the published price range for each. Sources above.
JobWhat it fixesPublished range
Regrout and resealCracked or missing grout, failed silicone at the joints and around the baseAbout $175 to $2,625
Re-waterproofA failed membrane, with tiles lifted and relaidAbout $500 to $1,200 for the waterproofing; tiling on top
RebuildMembrane failure that has damaged the structure, wall frames or floor$8,000 to $35,000 for a renovation; QBCC claims average almost $25,000

The reason the first row can be cheap and the second cannot is in the building code. The National Construction Code’s wet area requirement is that water must be prevented from penetrating behind fittings and linings; or into concealed spaces (National Construction Code 2022, Volume Two, H4P1 (Wet areas)). In a compliant shower, the layer that does that is the waterproofing beneath the tiles. Grout and silicone matter, and failed silicone at the base can be a leak point, but if the membrane itself has failed, new grout on top seals the surface and leaves the leak where it is. Some shower repair businesses say as much in their own marketing.

Four digits. Only restoration companies covering your postcode call you back, and only when they are taking enquiries.

How to tell which job you are pricing

  • Look at the joints. Cracked, missing or mouldy grout and silicone that has lifted from the base or the wall corners are the surface layer.
  • Look outside the shower. The QBCC lists damp patches that get worse after showers or rain, and loose tiles or cracked grout, as signs of waterproofing problems (Queensland Building and Construction Commission, Industry Snapshot Top 10 defects: Waterproofing). Swollen skirting boards, bubbling paint on the other side of the wall, or a stain on the ceiling below point to water already past the tiles.
  • Ask for the test. A repairer who says it is only the grout should be able to say how they know. Ask whether they will test the membrane, and ask for the answer in writing.

Paid assessments are published too: one Melbourne business advertises a shower assessment and rectification quote at $159. If the shower is in a newer home, an assessment can also be the evidence for a warranty claim.

Licences, warranties and insurance

Licensing. In Queensland, the QBCC says waterproofing is regulated work that must be done by licensed professionals. Ask whether a quote includes waterproofing and, if it does, who will do it and under what licence.

Builder’s warranty. In New South Wales, waterproofing is one of the major elements of a building, so a waterproofing failure in work less than 6 years old can be a major defect under the statutory warranty (Home Building Act 1989 (NSW) s 18E(4)). In Queensland, building work that allows water penetration into a building is structural defective work (Queensland Building and Construction Commission, What is defective work). The leaking shower guide sets out the warranty periods state by state.

Insurance. A shower that has been leaking slowly through failed waterproofing is where insurers rely on the wear and tear exclusion (Insurance Contracts Regulations 2017 (Cth) reg 19(2)(b)); the drying and the damage around it are the parts a claim may reach. The repair itself is then a question for the owner, or for the builder’s warranty.

What happened

What let the water in?

Where is it up to right now?

Who are you in relation to the property?

Are you claiming on insurance?

Four digits. It decides who can actually get to you, and which state’s building rules apply to the repair.

A useful answer looks like: “Flexi hose under the kitchen sink let go overnight. Kitchen and hallway carpet soaked, water has reached the second bedroom. Plumber capped it at 7am. Nobody has been out to dry it.”

  • Sent only to restoration companies covering your area, and never to more than three
  • Free to you — any company we pass it to pays a fixed fee per enquiry, agreed in advance
  • No obligation, and nothing here affects your insurance claim

Your enquiry is ready to send

Here is what happens after you submit:

  1. Your answers go only to restoration companies covering your postcode, and only when they are taking enquiries.
  2. No more than three of them may contact you, using the details you gave.
  3. You decide who, if anyone, you use. You are committed to nothing, and this does not lodge, alter or affect an insurance claim.

We are not a restoration company and we do not attend, assess or repair anything.

Common questions

How much does it cost to fix a leaking shower?

It depends on what is leaking. On prices published by Australian businesses, a single shower regrout is $175 to $500 in Canberra (Polytechnitis) and $630 to $2,625 nationally on one regrouting company's 2026 indication; waterproofing and membrane replacement is $500 to $1,200 on a Melbourne plumber's ballpark; and hipages publishes a bathroom renovation at $8,000 to $35,000.

How much does it cost to regrout a shower?

Published figures range from about $175 (Canberra, single shower) to $2,625 (one company's upper national figure for 2026). Dr Grout in Queensland publishes a standard regrout from $595, normally $850, with all grout and silicone replaced and sealed.

Will regrouting fix a leaking shower?

Only if the grout or silicone is what is letting water out. Under the building code, water has to be stopped from getting behind the linings and into concealed spaces, and in a compliant shower that is the job of the waterproofing beneath the tiles. If that has failed, new grout on top does not repair it.

Who can do shower waterproofing?

In Queensland, the QBCC says waterproofing is regulated work that must be done by licensed professionals. In NSW, waterproofing is one of the major elements of a building under the Home Building Act, with a 6-year statutory warranty for major defects.

Is a leaking shower covered by insurance?

The water damage from a sudden escape can be a listed event, but a shower that has been leaking slowly through failed waterproofing is where insurers rely on wear and tear. For a newer home, the builder's statutory warranty may be the better route.

How do I know if my shower is leaking?

The QBCC lists signs including damp patches that get worse after showers or rain, and loose tiles or cracked grout. Swollen skirting boards outside the shower and mould on the other side of the wall are other signs worth checking.
